Exploratorium
Colorfest

An extravaganza celebrating
the art and science of color

July 1–September 5, 2011

ColorFair at the Exploratorium
Sunday, August 28, 2011
Noon — 4:00 p.m.

CALL FOR LOCAL ARTISTS: We invite you to participate!

ColorFair is a free, open-air market featuring a mix of science and art demonstrations and colorful wares made by local artisans. Meet with other color connoisseurs to explore practical and beautiful applications of the visual spectrum. We'll celebrate color with adults and families and explore a rainbow of color phenomena through a host of hands-on science activities and exhibits.

The Exploratorium is moving to San Francisco’s Embarcadero in 2013. Your participation will help us prototype a new kind of program that we hope to hold regularly at our future home. Our goal is to create a vibrant gathering place for individuals, organizations, artists, scientists, and educators to share ideas, display arts and crafts, and gain an increased appreciation and understanding of our natural surroundings and community.

Who: The audience will include adults, families, tourists, and local residents. We anticipate approximately 1,500 museum visitors that day.

What kinds of activities will I find?
Local artisans will present perspectives on color through their work, including textiles and handcrafted jewelry. Hands-on activities will include science- and art-based explorations of color, such as dyeing activities and chemistry experiments. You’ll also find food carts and hands-on exhibits.

Am I eligible?
Every artwork sold at the fair must be designed and handmade by the artist. The artist must be in attendance to display and sell their work. Participating artists should live within 100 miles of San Francisco.

Do I need a California Seller’s Permit?
If you will be selling your work at the event, you must have a temporary or permanent California Seller’s Permit by the time of the event. California law states that you must have a resale certificate in order to make sales. You are considered a retailer if you are selling any tangible items to customers.

How do I apply?
Submit the ColorFair Participant Application. Applications are accepted online until August 7, 2011. All applicants will be notified of their acceptance by August 11.

Is there an application fee?
There is no fee to apply or participate.

How much space will I have?
We will provide you with a 6’ x 8’ area, one table, and up to two chairs. (It will help us organize if you provide your own furniture. Please let us know if you will bring your own table and chairs.)

When is the application deadline?
August 7, 2011

What is the jurying process?
We are looking for artists who enjoy interacting with people of all ages and want to share their creative process and tools with the public. Acceptance will also be based on the compatibility of the artwork to the event theme—exploring color—with a special emphasis on color in nature. We are excited about unique, high-quality, handmade items.

We are also looking for artists interested in working with us to create a regular, free, community-friendly program at the Exploratorium’s new home on the Embarcadero. We will be seeking your feedback and advice.

What if it rains?
The event will take place, but we may move the tables indoors.

Will there be anything to eat?
We will have several food carts where you can purchase food. We will not provide lunch, but a break room with light refreshments will be available. There is also a café inside the museum.

Is there parking?
Yes. We will provide maps and will schedule you for a load-in time.
