A fallen freeway interchange
from Retrofitting in Damage Control

The Golden State Freeway interchange fell first in 1971, when a quake hit during its construction. It was rebuilt to the same specifications and then collapsed when a 6.9 magnitude shaker struck Los Angeles in 1994. The freeway was rebuilt again, in the same spot, within six months. This interchange connected a major LA freeway with Interstate 5, the main thoroughfare between northern and southern California.
