CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

WELCOME TO MR. TREJO'S 9th GRADE PHYSICAL SCIENCE CLASS!!!!

It is with pleasure I welcome you to your first year of High School Science. Physical Science is a required course for high school graduation, Biology (I Oth grade class) is the second required course. If you are planning on going to college many of them require a 3rd year of science and recommend that you have 4 years. No matter what your ultimate goal is, every student at Deer Valley High School must take and pass 9th grade Physical Science. A failing grade in this class means that the course MUST be repeated and passed.

Through content we will be developing and enhancing the scientific processes of observing, communicating, comparing, ordering and categorizing, relating, inferring, and applying; skills that carry over into all aspects of life. Topics that will be covered include physics, astronomy, chemistry and earth science.

Parents/Guardians: It is important to me that every student has the chance to succeed; I believe that if we work together, teacher, student, and parent, we can ensure your student's success. If at anytime you have a question please don't hesitate to call 756-6711 x 6903(house 4 office, 776-5594). lam available to meet with students before school on Mondays and Thursdays. Students wishing to meet before school should check with me and verify the day and time. I will always make time for any student needing individual attention.

The following are my class expectations and procedures, please review them and discuss them with your student. Students are to keep this on file in their science notebook so that it may be referred to during the year.

CLASS BEHAVIOR

It is expected that every student will behave in such a way that (s)he does not interfere with my teaching nor with the learning of any other student. Respect must be accorded at all times to any person in the class as well as to the animals and plants in the room. Specific class rules are posted in the classroom and all students are expected to follow them. You will receive the team rules and consequences, these are in effect in all team classes. Attendance is very important, students should be in class every day.

LABS

The science curriculum is activity based. In order for this to be possible it is imperative that every student behave in a responsible manner. During labs it is very important that every student do as instructed and only as instructed, and that (s)he acts in a mature manner at all times. Lab Safety Procedures must be followed during every lab. If a student is not able to conduct him/herself in a safe and responsible manner during a lab, (s)he will be removed from the lab, get a grade of zero, a referral to the vice-principal, and depending on the severity of the infraction, may not be allowed to participate in further labs. This is a step that I hope will not have to taken with any student, but one I will take if a student jeopardizes his/her safety or that of another person in the class.

Lab equipment is to be used only as instructed. Misuse and carelessness can result in breakage of, or damage to, the equipment. Each student is responsible for the equipment (s)he is using and will be billed for any equipment and/or materials that are damaged. misused, or misplaced.

Written lab reports are required with every formal lab and the value of the written report is equal to that of a test. It is important that these assignments be turned in. Make-up labs are available for excused absences only.

Students may not participate in laboratory activities until a Student/Parent Lab Safety Contract is thoroughly read and signed by both student and parent/guardian and returned to Mr. Trejo. Please return this completed form at the next class meeting. A satisfactory grade on the lab safety test is also required.
