Each flask starts
out containing a clear yellow food solution and a tiny number of bacteria
that feed and reproduce. When the bacteria population has grown large
enough, the bacteria begin the chemical process that produces light.
After the bacteria have eaten all the food, usually one and a half hours
after they start to glow, they die quickly and the solution turns to
a cloudy yellow.
