How can doubling pennies over
just 14 days turn into a small fortune?
|
|
If
you do the calculations,
here’s how much
money you would gain
each day:
Day 1: 1 penny
Day 2: 2 pennies
Day 3: 4 pennies
Day 4: 8 pennies
Day 5: 16 pennies
Day 6: 32 pennies
Day 7: 64 pennies
Day 8: 128 pennies
Day 9: 256 pennies
Day 10: 512 pennies
Day 11: 1,024 pennies
Day 12: 2,048 pennies
Day 13: 4,096 pennies
Day 14: 8,192 pennies
If you add up all those
pennies, you would
have 16,383 pennies,
or $163.83. That’s an
example of exponential
growth.

It’s
easy to fold a sheet of
paper in half. But can you
fold a sheet of
paper in half ten times?
|
|
HERE’S
WHAT YOU NEED
|
•
|
A sheet of
newspaper (the larger, double-page size)
|
|
|
HERE’S
WHAT YOU DO
|
1.
|
Fold your sheet of newspaper in half in any
direction you want. How many
layers of newspaper do you have after folding the newspaper
once? Two!
|
2.
|
Without unfolding your
first fold, fold the newspaper in half again. Now you
have two folds and four layers.
|
3.
|
Fold the newspaper in
half again. How may layers of newspaper do you have
after three folds? Four folds? Five folds?
|
4.
|
Keep folding the newspaper
in half until you can’t fold it anymore. How many
folds were you able to complete? How many layers of newspaper
do you have?
