out of control through the tinderboxes South of the Slot. Smoke plumes
were visible from every hill. Thousands of people thronged onto Market
Street, some of them heading toward the Ferry Building, trying to get
out of town, hauling with them as many of their belongings as they could.
People pushed pianos down the streets, unwilling to leave their most prized
possession behind. Roland Roche, a post office employee, described the
