The Great Shake: San Francisco 1906 1906

B y seven in the morning, the city was in complete chaos. Fires were burning out of control through the tinderboxes South of the Slot. Smoke plumes were visible from every hill. Thousands of people thronged onto Market Street, some of them heading toward the Ferry Building, trying to get out of town, hauling with them as many of their belongings as they could. People pushed pianos down the streets, unwilling to leave their most prized possession behind. Roland Roche, a post office employee, described the scene:

the streets and . . . it became difficult to make our way through the blocked roadway and crowded traffic: buggies, autos, saddle horses, baby carriages -- everything on wheels had been pressed into service."
