The origin of the theory of continental drift is surprisingly simple: In the early 1900s, German meteorologist Alfred Wegener noticed that the contours of South Americas coastline seemed to "fit" with the west coast of Africa. Since then, fossil and geologic discoveries in Antarctica and elsewhere have provided support for the idea of continental drift. |
