Clay Bridges

After paper, we used modelling clay.

1. Describe the construction.

We started by heating the clay because it was hard. Then we modelled it to make it into a cylinder, which we flattened with a ruler and with our hands. Then we made discs to hold our bridge at the ends. We placed the bridge between two tables which could be easily separated. We separated them up to 17 cm. Then, the resistance of our bridge was tested. We succeeded in putting up to 1200 gr. of weight on the bridge before it flattened without breaking and without falling between the tables.

2. Why does it hold?

Thanks to the buttresses and the quantity of modelling clay which we had kneaded well.
