A slope is stable until an imperceptibly small change sets off an imbalance. Then an avalanche of snow, rocks, sand, or mud cascades downward until the slope is stable again. Social revolutions and crashes in the stock market happen with similar unpredictability. What other things build up slowly and let go suddenly, without warning?
