If you drag a magnet through beach sand, you can sometimes pick up small black bits of magnetic sand called magnetite. Collect a teaspoon of magnetite and sprinkle it on cardboard. Move the magnet underneath the cardboard and you'll find you can make flower-like patterns similar to those in Ned Kahn's artwork Magnetic Field Stones .
