Sound quality of hide skin drums improves with
thinner skins as they can tune more readily to higher frequencies
or pitches, however thinner skins will tear more easily.
A very thin skin won't have the same sound
quality of a thicker skin tuned high.
Defects in the skin or imperfections may
weaken the skin or affect the sound.
Some drummers will tune their drums so that
the sound of the drum will be in agreement with the band.
The skin will have to resist the force of a
hand slap. A very thin skin cannot resist this force.
If the skin is too thick it won't fit into the
rings which hold it on the chamber.
Every skin will have a point where it will
break, but some skins are more resistant than others to being
tightened without breaking. Some skins are also harder to tighten.
A skin may be tuned so that it complements a
certain drum chamber and the note will resonate and last longer
after the impact.
