Physical Features
-
Soil
-
Moisture- wet to saturated
-
Texture-crunchy, gooey, icky, slippery sticky.
-
lots of clay
-
Color -white, crusty salt on surface, green black
below the surface..
-
some ridges of crushed white shells
-
Height
-
Slightly above seal level
-
Becomes flooded during high tide
-
Many small pools
-
pH varies depending on the pond. One
pond next to a shelf of shells had a pH of 10,
another pond a pH of 8.
-
Salinity. On April 20 the salinity of a pond
with much salt grass was about 2.8%, slightly less
than ocean water. After a very warm day the
salinity increased to 3.2% about the same as ocean
water.
-
As expected, during warm afternoon, pond
temperatures were between 5 and 10 degrees C warmer
than SF Bay.
-
In a pond which contained a submerged stand of
grass, (perhaps cord grass), dissolved oxygen was
almost 20% higher in comparison to the cooler bay
water.
