When someone speaks of the weather, we think of the state of the atmosphere with respect to wind speed, rain, air pressure, temperature, and more. Scientists can measure the wind speed with an anemometer , precipitation with a rain gauge , air pressure with a barometer , and temperature with a thermometer . The state of the weather is an important aspect of life because it affects our daily lives and activities. The weather affects the clothes that we wear, our moods, and determines the activities that we engage in everyday. Project A: Say you love to go hiking and camping and you only have four days in August (August 7 through August 10, 2000), where would be an ideal place to go in the world? An ideal weather for hiking and camping would be a place free from rain, free from wild fires, free from storms, free from volcanoes, free from lighting, free from thunders, and free from hurricanes. Thus, an ideal weather conditions for hiking and camping would be sunny, low wind, and between 24-28 degree Celsius. 1) For this four days, which one of the five places listed here is ideal for hiking and camping? 2) Graph your results with place on the x-axis and the other parameters (wind speed, rain, air pressure, and temperature) on the y-axis.
Project B: Find one country in the world that would give you an ideal condition for hiking and camping with respect to weather. Be sure to analyze the wind speed, precipitation, air pressure, and temperature of the different countries that you are looking at. Here are some websites to guide you and for a more elaborated list, click on the globe above.
