Indentify one theme in a part of each interview.
Ashrawi's parents were a source of inspiration for her to achieve as a writer. One theme could be that they encouraged her to achieve whatever her mind could perceive. Another theme was to stand up for what you believed in.
Choose a part of a interview to work into your curriculum .
URL:
Ashrawi's interview on her writing achievements may work in to World Literature, Ethnic Literature, Modern World. We can have the students work in cooperative groups or independently, read the interview, formulate spiral questions, formulate more interview questions.,etc.
Why did you choose this interview?
I chose this interview because Ashrawi is an excellent role model for my students at Independence High. I have two muslim female students and one male student. They and the rest of my students can gain insight and motivation by studying Ashrawi's biography and publications
How would you need to prepare your students?
(Terms needing to be defined, background information, etc.)
They can search the internet for her biography, the Middle East, etc.
What is your stragedy for using this material in your class? What types of activies would you employ ? (e.g. interviewing, technology, essay or report, art project, etc.)
I would have the students do the following:draw freehand a map of the Middle East using various colors, draw the various flags, formulate questions they would use to interview Ashrawi, employ some History Alive! lessons like integratie art and metaphor writing, compare and contrast Ashrawi with another distinguished woman , include these lessons in their interactive notebook, etc.
