One theme that Dellums learned from his parents was to never accept anything at face value. Always be willing to question.

American Literature, Ethnic Literature , U.S. History and American Democracy lessons can be written around Dellums' political education i.e. his statement about the two types of leaders, his discussion on the MX missile, his discussion on M.L. King, the Vietnam war, and the post cold war. Career Education lessons can be written about his social work , congressional work, etc.
Why did you choose this interview?
I chose this interview because Dellums in an excellent role model for the diverse students at Independence High School. There are several lessons that can be drawn from this interview.
How would you need to prepare your students?

Have the students do a timeline of their own lives and illustrate about 6 historical event. Have the students read Dellums' biography, research the internet, etc.

Have the students formulate their own interviewing questions, research the internet, make web sites, write reports, design a timeline of their life as well as one of Dellums, Ashrawi, and Sachs, compare and contrast the backgrounds of the interviewees, draw a picture and write a metaphor for each interviewee.
