PARTICLE ESTIMATION LAB

Team up in quads to discuss the hypothesis, state your purpose, design a procedure, and perform this experiment. Individually record all your work.

HYPOTHESIS: The number of relatively homogeneous particles contained in a jar can be scientifically estimated.

PURPOSE: Determine the number of your particles in your jar by 3 slightly different methods, without opening the jar and counting them.

EQUIPMENT and SUBSTANCES: Use ONLY the following equipment: scale, plastic weighing cup, full and empty jars, and supply of extra particles

PROCEDURE: Record in print a clear and logical prodedure while experimenting, by studying the PURPOSE, EQUIPMENT and SUBSTANCES, DATA, and PtheD.

DATA: Record a clear label(name) = number and unit for each measurement, showing between 2 and 4 significant figures, and use correct scientific notation somewhere in your numerical data and/or work.

PROCESSING the DATA(PtheD): Do clearly labeled calculations in a logical sequence, resulting in your final answer with correct units, significant figures and scientific notation. Repeat your procedure a slightly different way two more times. Calculate the average final answer for comparison to other class' results for grading.
