In COLUMNS, sections of graduated color bands seem to be lighter at one edge and darker at the other. Lateral inhibition, which occurs when light falling on one part of the retina reduces the sensitivity of neighboring parts of the retina, accounts for this highlighted sense of lightness and darkness.
