Energy from Wood
Termites
eat wood to get energy to live and reproduce. Termites feed on damp
rotting trees, and occasionally on houses. Trees build themselves
by using energy from the sun to make a complex sugar called cellulose.
The energy remains trapped in the wood until the tree dies. Termites
chew through the wood to eat the energy-rich cellulose. At this
exhibit visitors can see termites in action.
