Island in the Stream
Visitors
control the frequency of an agitator in a small wave tank. The water
waves break apart as they bend around a small "island"
and then gradually close in beyond the block. The tightly-packed
waves (higher frequency) bend less than the widely-spaced waves
(lower frequency). This phenomenon is true not only for water waves,
but for sound and light as well.
