The light shining
form the circles on the back wall looks like ordinary white light, but
it isn't ordinary at all. The light in this exhibit is unusual because
each of the colors is polarized in a different direction. Since your
eyes can't tell the difference between horizontal and vertical polarized
light, the light still looks white to you. When the white circles reflect
from the tabletop and reflections from the walls are different because
the table top reflects horizontal polarized light and walls reflect
vertically polarized light.
