Mechanically, the PLANIMETER
is pretty simple. It has only one moving part that touches the table—the
steel rim sandwiched between the brass knurled wheel and the planimeter
dial. As the bull's-eye is moved around a shape, this steel rim
rolls forward, rolls backward and skids sideways. The final dial
reading represents the sum of all the rim's rolling motions.
