RANDOM DOT STEREOGRAMS
are pictures which create 3-D images out of two dimensions. Each picture
consists of randomly placed dots created by a computer. When you view
the pictures through polaroid filters, a different set of dots (or images)
goes to each eye, creating an image with depth. These pictures were
originally designed by psychologist, Bela Julesz, to determine whether
depth perception takes place in the eye or the brain. The results indicate
the the brain is responsible, as neither eye alone has enough information
here to see the 3-D forms.
