This exhibit
demonstrates the rapid adaptation that the perceptual system is
capable of. The visitor looks through a pair of prism glasses. The
prisms shift the visual field to the side. A table in front of the
visitor has rods stuck through it. The visitor is instructed to
reach under the table for the center rod. Because of the prisms,
this will be very difficult at first but will become easier with
practice as the eye-brain-muscles adapt to the new situation. If
the glasses are removed and the reach for the rods is now attempted,
the visitor will have to re-learn the original coordinationt.
