VISUAL
STREAMS demonstrates how different kinds of visual information are
processed in different areas of the brain. Some areas seem to specialize
in simple visual properties, such as edges, color, and motion. Other
areas may deal with more complex processes, such as recognizing
faces. As far as we know, no single area of the brain combines these
views into the complete image we see. Yet, somehow, they are integrated
to form a unified visual perception of the world. In this exhibit,
a real time video of the visitor and surroundings is processed and
projected on three screens to simulate a sense of how the world
would appear if the visual system reacted to only one kind of information.
