Objects packed in the minimum possible volume are CLOSE PACKED. A grocer set up an orange display by layering the fruit so that each layer rests in the voids of the layer below. Simple molecules stack (actually BOND) in similar arrangements. Packing arrangements for more oddly shaped molecules are more complicated. The circles below are close packed (in a plane rather than in a volume.)
