supernova A supernova is the explosion of a star. A supernova releases huge amounts of energy, which is why you can see it glowing brightly in this 1997 NASA image of a supernova in a distant galaxy.

This petroglyph, found near Peñasco Blanco at Chaco Canyon, is thought by some to be a representation of this spectacular cosmological event.
