Exploratorium Magazine Online: The Evolution of Language

Sir William Jones

W hile others had noticed similarities among Sanskrit and various European languages, it took Jones who made systematic comparisons of vocabulary and grammar, and who understood that languages evolve in an orderly fashion to supply compelling evidence of the Indo-European language family and its extinct ancestor. His comparative approach became one of the key tools of subsequent linguistic analysis.
