At its heart, Invisible Dynamics is an exploration of the nature of place: what are the underlying and often invisible factors that give a place its unique and multivaried character? The project was initially designed as a "study" of the specific neighborhood surrounding the Exploratorium. As the project evolved, so did the realization that the contemporary world is an expanding information system whose tools allow us to explore our lives at a detail and at scales we could never easily approach before. This access to tools for analyzing global-scale phenomena also prompted us to look at ways in which the San Francisco Bay region is a microcosm of the Pacific Rim.
