To use this site effectively, your computer must meet the following requirements:

Javascript: must be enabled with your browser

Supported browsers:
Netscape 6.0 or higher
Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
Firefox 1.0 and higher
Mozilla 1.6 or higher

Note: Safari bug: you may need to double-click video and Quicktime buttons in the gallery.

.zip? Some images in the Classroom Explorations sections are availabled in "zipped" packages. This allows you to download a number of image files at once. You must have a computer configured to "unzip" the packages. Here are some links to websites that explain this process:


"Bigger Images" and "High Bandwidth Video:"
Large images and large videos appear in their own browser window (a "pop-up" window). Javascript pop-up windows must be enabled. These settings are usually found in your web browser settings. However, if your computer has a firewall, the firewall may be preventing pop-up windows.
Some older browsers put pop-up windows behind the main page that you are viewing.

Video: All of our videos appear in Macromedia Flash 8 and higher (.swf) format. You must have the Flash Player plug-in installed on your system to see the videos.
Download the Flash Player plug-in.

High Bandwidth Video: Most videos are larger than 2 megabytes (2000K). Dial-up connections could take a very long time to download these files.

PDFS: "Flipbooks" and "Visitor Research and Evaluation" articles are served in PDF format. To view this content, your computer must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.

Bookmarking images, videos and other assets: If you would like to save the location of an image or movie, simply go to the webpage containing the asset you would like to save, then bookmark the page using your browser's bookmarking features. Or, you could try dragging the link in the address bar to your desktop. Each asset will appear as a separate bookmark, so you can save these links for future reference.
Upgrade notice: As of February 2007, we have upgraded our website. We have not removed any content, and old bookmarks should work, with the following exceptions.
* Model organisms has moved into the gallery
* The stem cells and zebrafish articles have moved to the 'Features' section, and are accompanies by new feature stories.

Want to save an image to your computer? Our images are available free for educational purposes (see use policy ). If you would like to save an image, video, or other asset to your computer, follow these instructions:

General instructions for saving an image to your computer:
Windows 98 and higher

To save an image to a Windows machine (XP, 2000, 98): Right click your mouse on the image that you would like to save. A small window will appear, select "Save Picture As." Choose a folder, and click on "Save."

Macintosh OS 9, OS 10

To save an image to a Macintosh machine (OS 9, using Internet Explorer): Control-click on the image that you would like to save. A small box will appear. Choose "Download image to disk" to save the image to a folder of your choosing.

To save an image to a Macintosh machine (OS 10, using Safari): Control-click on the image you would like to save. A small box will appear. Choose "Save Image As" to save the image to a folder of your choosing.

If these instructions are not sufficient, you can find support for this question by doing a Google search with your operating system name, browser name, and keywords such as "downloading images."
