I was an infant, 1949, being held horizontally by my grandmother near lace curtains. They were dusty and I sneezed. I haven't told this many times. The memory is as clear as can be, the tickle in the nose, the surprise evoked by the sneeze. The appearance of the curtains makes the memory date accurate (they were changed soon after). Also have memories of being breastfed, diapers changed, my infant siblings.

Two years old. It is Christmas Eve and we heard on the radio that Santa Claus was just seen flying over the Golden Gate Bridge with his reindeer. We were living in Marin just across the bridge and I never rushed so quickly to get to sleep before he arrived. I galloped upstairs riding my stick horse and wearin' my daniel boone coon skin cap. It was just 6:30 at night.

When I was in Kindergarten, we had to line up outside after lunch. When we were about to go in, I had to pee really bad. I couldn't hold it, so i wet my pants. The boys next to me were laughing at me. I didn't tell the teacher because i was afraid the other children would laugh at me. When i sat, i didn't let my skirt touch the seat because it was all sticky and wet. A few people peeked under my skirt and said my underwear was really yellow. When i got home, I didn't want to tell my mom first because i was afraid she'd spank me so i told her i fell in a puddle of water. She asked me why my underwear was yellow and why i peed in my pants. I told her i had to go but the teacher wasn't there. She didn't believe me, slapped me a few times on my covered bottom and sent me to my room. I cried in there all afternoon. At night, when i was about to sleep, she came in my room, and spanked me with my pants down saying i shouldn't have lied to her. This is accurate. I asked my mom and she said she was really angry that time.
Amy Payne
I was about 4. My babysitter was really annoyed with me. Later, i wet my pants and she spanked me on my bare-bottom. Later, she told my mom and my mom spanked me while yelling at me.

I got into the car with my father. We drove up the hill and pulled into the parkinglot. I waited for him to get me out of the car. I wanted to go back home. I did not want to be here. As we walked into the building, I could hear my black shoes echo down the hall. My dad stopped to talk to someone. She pionted further down the hall. We continued walking. As we turned the corner, I started to cry. I begged my father to take me home. He said that I had to stay. He spoke to another person. Then he kissed me goodby. I continued to cry. I was seated in the middle of the room. Everyone seemed to be looking at me. This is how my first day of kindegarden started. This is accurate according to my father. I was five years old. Even after this first experience of school, I am going to be an elementary school teacher.

My grandfather died when I was about 11 I had prayed for about 2 weeks to say my last good bye. He was the only grandfather I knew. I was really sad that he had died of cancer. Then one nightI had woke up crying when I had seen him sitting on my pink bed. I asked him why he was here and he said to me "because you prayed for me." I had stayed up talking to him for about 5-10 more minutes and he said tell your grandmother that "I will be watching over you" and then he said take care of the family and and alyways stay Calm . Then he said "I LOVE YOU GOOD BYE FOR NOW. People say that I am stupid for beliving this but in my heart I know I seen my grandpa.

Our hous was on an acre lot. Behind the house was a strip of lawn and a little less than 1/2 acre of raw land, 2 walnut trees flanked the edges and an apricot tree stood agains a cinder block wall at the very back. Some of my older brothers were under the apricot tree and I wanted to go see what they were doing. I had no shoes on so when I wandered across a puncture weed that was greater in diameter than my height, I was immediately stopped by the pain in my soles. I fell down and the "stickers'' punctured my knees, forearns and hands. My screaming wails brought two of my brothers forth. One held me up by the armpits while the other carfully picked the stickers out. I remember staying frozen in the position in which I had fallen while they did this. I know I was not yet in school, so I was no older than four. I recall only wearing shorts, or maybe even a diaper. I cannot say for sure if I was that young, though. Probably 3 or 4

I was three. My older brother and I entered an abandoned house together. On a wooden barn collapsing wall was a painting of the ever-popular "Dogs playing Poker". I assumed that these were the residents of the house that we had entered. I ran as though my life had depended on it. I was found some miles away about an hour later. Those that found me verify the story and still quiz me to this day (i'm 46) on what was i thinking? An earlier memory...is of a black dog hovering over me in a crib. I heard a voice- a cynical voice telling me that life is hard. My mother has told me of a growling dog over my crib when they left me unattended outside once. A connection beween these two?
wesley john luke jenkins
Iwas 18 months old and wearing a diaper, it was hot and the window was open with a sheer curtin blowing out with a hot wind. Playing in the sandbox in my backyard in Georgia. (I have not lived in Georgia for 33 years.) I was two, maybe three. I've discussed with my parents but have not told this many times. I believe it is accurate. I don't know if this came first: I remember the night my sister was born. I was eating cornflakes and milk in a bowl in the middle of the night, at the kitchen dinette, with my dad and rode with my dad in his 1950 something Chevy called "Black Beauty" to the hospital to wait for my mom to give birth. While riding in the back seat, I was curled up with a blanket. The chairs in the hospital waiting room were made of hard plastic and were bucket like. They were orange. The lighting was harsh. I was three. I have discussed this a number of times with my parents. They say it is accurate.

Being stung by a bumble-bee while picking dandalions for my mother. I was 2 or 3 years old and I know its accurate because my mother remembers it vividly as she had told me she "really liked dandalions" Better than the roses I had just picked from the lady next-door¥s flower-bed! (This part I don¥t remember but the bee sting I will never forget) After all it WAS my mothers fault!

When I was three years old, we lived across the street from my grandmother. I remember her comming across the street and throwing snow balls at our window. I am very sure that this memory is accurate because, my mother tells me that one day I walked across the street and tried to throw snow balls at grandma's window. I got in trouble for walking across the street.

I was startled awake in the midst of a drizzly night. Not by a sound, or a nightmare, but by a shivery feeling--something was in my room. Though scared, I couldn't resist the cacoethes to peek. I remember the soft green grass and the dandilions growing around. I remember plucking the grass with my chubby two-year-old hands. I remember rolling it between my fingers as I glanced up at my father sitting in a lawn chair with his broken leg propped up on a milk crate. I remember the warm yellow sun on my back. I remember the fishing pole in my father's hands and I remember flashes of silver from the river in front of us. It was the best day of my entire life.
Jennifer Frisch
6 months old. Summer of 1952. I have told 20 + times and confirmed it with the people who were there. It is acurate. The detail is astounding! I am sitting on my godmother's lap. She is drinking a liquor over ice. I am wearing a blue jumper that has an appliqued train with button wheels on it. I know it is a train even though I can't say it. This makes me proud. We are watching my father wall in my brother's bedroom, which is in a loft of the barn. It is exciting watching the pine paneling boards go up, one after the other, from my left to my right while the beams of the livingroom ceiling disappear. I get too excited and my godmother puts me off her lap.

My dad was fastening the buckle on my shoes. They were brown and had a flower on them. My mom was sitting on the sofa and my dad and I were on the carpeted floor. Sunlight was streaming in from behind my mom. My mom and my dad were angry and fighting. My dad took the shoe he was about to put on my foot and threw it against the wall. I was about 3. I do tell it when asked what my first memory is (maybe 10 or so times in my life), but I hate telling it because then people seem to think I had a horrible childhood or that it is representative of the way I think about my parents. They are still married now (22 years later!) and I love and respect them both, although I must have inherited my dad's temper (sometimes I throw soft things against the wall when I'm angry). I know the memory of the room is accurate and I've asked my parents about it and they seem to agree with my desciption of something that could have possibly happened. I know, ambiguous. - Wednesday, June 17, 1998 at 13:06:09 (PDT) When I was 3 years old, my family built a new home. I remember this house being built and living there but nothing about the actual move.

I was about 2(+) and he scared the daylights out of me by approaching me with his arms out-stretched saying "I'm a-gonna get you, I'm a-gonna get you...". One of my first clear memories is falling down brick steps and damaging my teeth. I'm not sure it's my earliest memory. I have told the story to my wife many times when we discussed our very early childhood memories. She can remember back further than I can. Her first memory is standing in her crib, staring at a lima bean on the floor. She swears the bean got up and walked away. A green roach?
John Norton
I remember sitting at the kitchen table with the sunlight streaming in through the window, and eating the "silver-dollar" sized pancakes my mother made for me. If they were tiny enough I could eat a whole dozen. Once I had a neighbor child over to join me, and she was fascinated at how small and delicate they were. She ate more than me. I couldn't have been more than four because we moved from that apartment house while I was four. My mother was the most wonderful cook... I miss her.
Mary Alice Legendre Cain
My earliest memory is of my mother showing me baby jellyfish no bigger than a dime in the canal near our house in Hawaii. When she lifted them out of the water with her fingernail they'd turn into formless blobs; back in the water, they'd become pulsating, beautifully mysterious creatures. I was about 3 years old -- not yet in preschool

I was 3 or 4 years old. It was just me and my dad at the time. We were up north where it was really cold and snowy. Our car had broken down on the side of the road and we were walking down the highway. The next thing I remember is a policeman stopping to help us, then me getting in the back of the cop car to warm up. Later, when the cop was gone, I remember my dad yelling at me for getting in the cop car. I guess he thought the cop was going to steal me or something. Also, somewhere in this time I was running down the side of the highway and I slipped and fell on the asphalt and busted my lip. I've only mentioned it a couple times when I was younger. My dad says it's true.

I have a clear memory of climbing out of my crib and walking down the hallway toward my parents. I was afraid I was going to be spanked for climbing out of the crib so I held out my hands to keep my parents from spanking me. I also remember crying while I watched the crib being disassembled and returned to the family from whom we borrowed it. I have told these memories many times. Both of these events occurred before I was two years old.

I've always divided my own memories into "real" memories and "photograph"-based memories. My earliest real memory is of reaching up to the wrought-iron railing going up the stairs to the second floor--of our new house, to which we moved when I was two-and-a-half years old. There's no photograph of that image!

My earliest memory was being on the paddleboat in Disneyland, and listening to the song "I Wear My Sunglasses at Night". I thought it was so cool because I actually had my sunglasses on. At the time I was about 4 or 5. I've told the memory many times, and yes, I'm sure it's accurate.

Hitting a baseball through a neighbors window and then immediately wetting my pants. I remember not being able to figure out which was worse. Age: 6 I have a hard time distinguishing between a real memory, things I heard told again and again and photographs.

When I was three, I was sitting underneath a tree. I realized that the tree was bigger than me, the house was bigger than the tree, and the sky was bigger than the house. Then looking down, I realized that the grass was smaller than me, and a bug was smaller than the grass. Then i thought, what's bigger than the sky? What's smaller than the bug? I never told anyone this story until I was an adult, because my working class neibors and family would have thought I was insane. Yes, I became a scientist.

I had eleven brothers and sisters. In 1956 eight of us had the measels at the same time. We were all confined to one bedroom and had to stay there for days with the curtains drawn shut. We had no television. Most of us had to sleep on the floor. Including me. I was three.

I remember my mom braiding my hair. I was sitting on the toilet seat and I wanted to go outside and play with my dad and brother in the garden. I was three. Maybe four. I haven't told that memory to anyone .... it seems so trite.

My first memory is of standing in a crowd at the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle. I was four years old and all the building were huge and bizarre both in shape and color (the theme was space-age). My mother was explaining that the centrifugal-force ride in which the floor drops out, was too dangerous for me. (Everything seemed dangerous at that moment.) I've only told the memory a few times. My mother said it was accurate.
