The scientific talks during
the "Biology of DNA" meeting gave nods to the past, present and
future of genetic science. This illustrated slide presented during
Eric
Lander's talk
, shows the evolution of modern biology. It started as
a field that focused first on observing whole organisms and their evolution,
then turned to the minute molecules of life, including DNA and proteins,
and now focuses largely on mining the information stored in those molecules.
In many ways, biologists are now returning to their Darwinian roots by using
the information gleaned from DNA to look at the evolutionary relationships
among organisms from mice to humans.
