Eye
on the Horizon of Time
This
Hubble image represents the farthest we have ever peered into
space, showing hundreds of never-seen-before galaxies--including
ones as far as 12 billion light years away. That means you’re
seeing these galaxies as they looked 12 billion years ago, relatively
soon after the Big Bang. By studying the rich array of shapes
and colors in the image, scientists learn not only what very
early galaxies looked like, but also how the early universe
evolved.
To make
this image, known as "Hubble Deep Field South," the
space telescope was pointed at one tiny part of the sky for
ten days, allowing it to detect the extremely dim light from
ancient galaxies.
