Wave
periods in the north central Pacific at noon on February 6, 2003. The
wave period is the time between wave peaks. The longer the period, the
faster the waves are moving, because the energy of their motion has kept
them relatively far apart. The vectors (red arrows) show which direction
the waves are moving. In this example, the wave period near our buoy (at
37N and 160W) is 13.
