Thin Film Interference

Bubbles-Soap Film Painting, Snackbook. Students observe the patterns in bubbles and look for clues as to when the bubble will pop. Pour the bubble solution into petri dishes and use a straw to inflate the bubble. Put the entire setup on top of a piece of black construction paper. It helps if the kids sit still so as not to create air disturbance.

Laser Mirrors-Have students look through the mirrors and at the light reflected from the mirror.

Aurora Cellophane-For some bubbles that don't pop...Aurora cellophane is available at most stores that sell gift wrap. Again look at the reflected light verses the transmitted light. A great alternative is to show that the color is being produced by a clear substance. Have the students sink a 2" square of black construction paper in water. (Check to see if the color runs beforehand.) Place one drop of clear nail polish (Hard as Nails) onto the water above the paper. Pick up the paper so that the nail polish is caught on it. Ooh!

UV Lens-Students look at the UV filter I no longer use for my camera-notice the purple tint.

Antireflection Coating-I was able to pick up a piece of glass only partly covered with an antireflection coating.
