Saving Seeds, Saving Culture
The seeds from each farmer are given a unique label that conveys quite a bit of information about the plant. First are descriptive words, like tribe names, colors, and shapes. These are followed by an accession number, which is like a library call number. This number begins with a letter code for the crop (here ZM for Zea mays ), followed by a number that's assigned to that specific variety of the crop. On the jar on the far right, for example, 02 represents a variety of corn called "Southwestern Plateau." The number following the dash, 110, means that these seeds are the 110th collection of Southwestern Plateau corn aquired by the seed bank. NS/S also keeps a record of the location and farmer that each seed collection comes from so that they can return to the same place and person in the future.
