If the diversity
is to be preserved, the seeds must be planted and grown out every
few years and fresh ones collected and put into storage. For this purpose,
NS/S operates a 60-acre farm outside of Patagonia, Arizona. Their goal is
to grow out all of their seeds to have fresh freezer samples. In 2004, they
finished growing out all of their 400 bean varieties, and are now working
on corn (of which they have over 500 varieties).
