Being breast fed. Eating coal while teathing. looking through a tunnel at a face. Realizing that speech was a means of comunication, while not understanding the words being spoken. discovering gravity when crawling over the top of a staircase and being surprised! All this must have taken place before the age of one year old and I can honestly remember it clearly as if it was only yesterday!
Alan Robinson - England
i'm riding in the front seat of the car, it has a dark interior, maybe black, and we are on a divided road, maybe four lanes. it is daytime. looking out the driver's window there are trees, and in the distance, tall buildings. i have the sense that there is nothing, an empty space, behind me, outside the passenger window. i don't even notice who is in the car with me, just the bright sun and the trees and the buildings. the first time i told this was in my twenties. my mom was shocked -- she said i was describing the street near our first house in chicago -- we left when i was nine months old. no idea if it's true.

I remember standing at the edge of a hole in the the backyard looking for something, I think it was one of my shoes. My parents were mad because they thought I had thrown it down the hole, but I don't remember throwing it. I just remember being very anxious to see or find whatever it was that they were angry about. My father was a very tall, stern man, unapproachable and sometimes scary because I did not know him at all. When I was under two years old, we went on a family picnic. After lunch he got down on the ground and played in the grass with my older brother and me. I remember the sunshine and the bright green grass and the dark gray smooth texture of his trousers. I was very excited because I could put my arms around him. It is the ONLY time my dad ever played with me. I'm 47 now and my father has passed away. In his latter years we became closer and he regretted not having been more nurturing to us kids. I wish he had been too. I have shared this memory with my two children and their father. My mother has verified it.

My parents tell me I was two years old when my grandfather died. He was from a small town in Minnesota. All the members of the family went to the funeral but left me and my cousin with a woman who I did not know. I remember I started to cry for my parents and she put me on her cupboard and gave me an ice cream cone so I would not cry. I can still taste the vanilla when I think of this memory.
Janet
very strangely thinking I was not my mother (sounds strange I know). It was a kind realisation I was somebody else. I haven't got a clue about my age then, although I couldn't do much (certainly not walk) so it must have been around one. maybe my understanding of this changed, however I'm sure I felt something like this while very young. I can also clearly remembre me remembering this event (several times even) and each time wondering about my sanity then.
Ernest ter Kuile
I remember the feel of my plastic baby bottle in my hand and the feel and taste of the rubber nipple in my mouth, but my strongest earliest memory is the sour taste of milk when I burped/spit up. I'm not sure how old I was but guess it was less than two; old enough to hold my own bottle, anyway.

I was up and outside early to play. The sun was just shining over the trees. I spun in circles in the street and thought, "This is my last day of freedom. Tomorrow I start kindergarten and I will probably be in school for the rest of my life." I was 5 at the time. Today I'm 23, in graduate school and may very well get my Ph.D. and then teach - thus proving my childhood intuition right.

One of my earliest memories(under 3)is of two men trying to coax me into a building with them by taking my little Peke dog and telling me that they would hurt him if I didn't come with them. Although I had fear I went to keep my pup safe. The taller of the two was holding my dog by the nape of the neck and my dog was whimpering. That made me cry and they told me to go home, but not to tell anyone as they would come back and hurt my dog and kill him. Iremember that my Mother kept after me as to what was wrong. I remember telling her what had happened, and who it was. She told me not to worry, that she and Daddy would not let the guys or anyone else ever hurt my or my dog. My Dad went roaring out of the house. I never did know what happened. Mom told me not to worry. They never would talk about it. Mom was very hurt that I carried that ugly memory from such a young age

My sister and her boyfriend were going for a car ride and I wanted to go with them. They told me to go in the house and get my little red purse I always carried. When I came out they were driving away, waving and laughing. I sat on the front steps and cried. I was 4 or 5 years old. I have told this quite a few times mostly to my own children. It is so vivid it has to be real.

After attending mass , dad and I went to woods to pick wild lilies and lady slippers for Mother. It may have been Mothers day instead of Easter . I must have been two or three.
Shirley Reiser Johns
In the 1940's my sister and I would get on a streetcar with mother for a three mile ride to my aunt's apartment. We would always run up and stand beside the conductor for the best view of the road. Often it was dark when we returned. It was exciting to our seven year old minds when the trolley slowed before entering a wooden bridge en route. We walked home three blocks from the stop. It is a wonderful memory because nothing bad ever happened to us during those trips with a 4 cent fare.

my earliest memory was having a toilet plnger stuck to my eyball and knowing that if I pulled on it my eyeball would pop out. A few years ago I asked my mom about this and she told me I was a baby in a high chair with one of those rattles that stuck to the tray with a suction cup on my eye. She didn't remember my age, but I wasn't talking yet, and I remember the thought that my eye would come out if I pukked on the plunger. It took me many years to realize the toilet plunger idea did not make sense.

My earliest memory is of my mother. She passed away when I was 3 and a half years old in 1936. We lived in a tenement flat on Chicago's west side. We did not have a private bath. The other four families who had flats in the building shared a centrally located bath in the hallway. My Mom was fixing to give me a bath and I heard the organ grinder and his monkey outside on the street. My Mom opened the window so I could hear the music. My Aunt, her oldest sister came from her flat down the hall and came in and started complaining to my Mom that I would catch a cold with the window open. My Mom got angry with her and told her that I was her child and she believed hearing the music kept me in a fun state of mind. Mom also said "as long as I am around, I want music in her life." I don't remember what happened after that. However I do know the kitchen sink was a high one and the window was just to the right of it. My Aunt, who was over 50 when my Mom passed away, and she and I talked about this incident in years to come because she said I was just like my Mom in that I took to many risks for fun sake.

I wanted to ask my Mom a question. So I drove (Flintstones style) my little red car down the hallway, and bumped into the back of my Mom's leg, and looked up at the towering figure, and asked "Mom, when am I three" [3 years old]. My mom bent over and moved her hand close to my face, then she held up three fingers on each hand and said, (with a emphasis on the word three), "In THREE days you'll be THREE".
