My oldest sister left her razor next to the bathtub when I was 3 years old. While I was taking a bath, I tried to shave my legs and I cut my knee. My first site of blood! Oddly enough, I didn't panic but I called my mother in to see. She yelled at my sister, but my sister already felt bad enough. I was the baby! I still have the scar to prove it too!

My mother was in the hospital with breast cancer. I was about 3 years old and didn't know why we had to go to this other place to see my mother. She would always have a small cup of vanilla pudding with her which I relished during the visit. I remember her smiling because it made me happy. It has been about 22 years since then and my mother is now healthy and happy. Thank God!

I was about 4 years old sitting in the living room watching TV with the rest of my family in the early evening, when we heard a terrible noise louder than thunder. The whole house shook and the windows quivered. We all ran outside to see a huge fireball in the sky. The next day my mother took me to preschool to find out the school windows had all been knocked out by a huge explosion. It turned out a freight train on the tracks near the school collided with a fuel tank. My mother can confirm this because I was in her hair for the next few days while the school was being renovated.

It was my 1st or 2nd full summer. I was born in July of '42 so this was '43 or '44. I wan in a playpen on our front stoop. It was sunny. I was looking out between the vertical slats at a spikey plant with green leaves with yellow edges (believe it now to be an Aloe). I can see my left hand gripping the wooden slat. I can feel the sun on the right side of my face.

I belive my first reliable memory, that is one not influenced by former photographs or family reminescences, was an insident that prompted a comming of age. I was cared for by a home sitter during the day while my mother worked and I remember being half awake following an afternoon nap in my wooden crib and rather non- chalantly having a BM. This greatly upset my sitter who scolded me "you're too old to do that!" which I had to admit was very true. I resolved never to repeat that behavior and never did. I must have been two to three years old in 1947 or 1948.

Although I have had several "glimpses" into my past most details are rather sketchy. Of all memories that I have I believe my earliest to be that of visiting the Public Library and going to Story Hour, where I met many of my friends. I wasn't very old but going there once a week, seeing the people, and reading the books meant the world to me. In a sense I suppose that is where I found what I wanted to do; write. My parents were very supportive of me, and encouraged me to work hard at everything I encountered. So, by the age of 4, I was reading better than many of my 6 year old friends at the library.

I was two years old,it was someones birthday party in my neighborhood. They had a pony and everyone was laughing and screaming about riding this pony. She bent down ,wiped my faced and asked me what was wrong. pleading with her to let me ride the pony[not really knowing what it was] but understanding that it had to be ridden .I't not hers ,she trys to explain,I cry harder and harder still. I haven't told anyone the memory. I was twoish, I think, not yet three, because my mom was attempting to pottytrain me by making me wear normal undies instead of diapers, and I wasn't very good at it yet. I remember looking out the window in my sister's room and shocking myself by suddenly pissing myself. I was wearing a little polyester pantsuit and the warm pee ran down my legs and into my shoes and onto the pretty red carpet, and I cried because I was ashamed and afraid. It is an accurate memory, because nobody has told me that story; I was alone when it happened and I can still remember the sensation and the shame.

I also remember my grandmother kept me and my two cousins, and we would play in her yard all day. I remember there was an old tire she used as a border around some flowers, and we would try to walk around the tire without falling off. At night we would catch lightening bugs, and I would pull their tails off and write my name on my shirt, and it would "glow" for a while. When I was about 5 or 6, my sisters and I would pack a "lunch" of peanut butter and crackers and go up on the levee near our house to play. In the summer there would be lots of clover. We would pick the clover blossoms, bite a hole in the stems and string them together to make "halos" for our heads. One time in the winter I was on a sled with my older sister. We were both screaming with joy and excitement. As we neared the bottome of the levee I realized we couldn't stop. I was still screaming, my sister jumped off the sled, and I hit the barbed wire fence at the bottom with my mouth wide open. Needless to say, I lost a few teeth!

When I was a one year old, my demented senile grandmother came to live with us. She was ninty~five at the time and used to babysit me often. She lost one leg in an auto accident and was also blind in one eye. Every sunday morning my parents used to go to church and she would stay home to babysit me. As I said before she was extremely demented. One of her favorite things to do would be to pop out her glass eye, take out her fake teeth, remove her wig, and attempt to molest me while singing "oh come all ye faithful". Every so often I'll wake up in the night,,,,full cold sweat,,still envisioning those rotting gums smacking together, and that festering green tounge snaking out of it's ancient tavern to ravish and caress my infant body. As far as I can remember this is the earliest memory for the medication they give me at the hospital blanks out a lot of good times.....

When I was 3 or 4, my grandparents came to visit. We hadn't seen them in several months and my grandma said to me, "My, my, you must have grown a foot since I saw you last!" And I replied, "No, Memaw, I still only have 2 feet!"

I remember dressing up as King Kong for Halloween when I was about 5 and my 2 year old sister was Casper the Ghost. She would cry every time I put on my King Kong mask so my mom made me take it off. Boy, was I mad at my sister!

My mom was carrying me up the stairs which had orange carpeting, we had just gotten home from somewhere. Also I remember when the movers came and the truck was so big. We moved when I was about 2. Told it when my mom was talking about the townhouse we lived in much later, she confirmed it.
