My earliest memory is of holding my sisters hand and walking her across the street ...we were both in diapers and had left home........crossed 3 stop lights and were picked up by police officers on the bridge going over the river. We'd woken from our naps and went looking for Mom ...she was in the back yard but we went looking out front.

When I was two, I was at my grandparent's house. My grandmother came into the room. I was standing on the bed, looking out the window. I had just finished my nap. She told me that my mom just gave birth to my sister. This is the earliest memory I have. The only one that I have when I was an "only" child for the first two years of my life. My grandmother has confirmed this. I'm not sure how many times I have told this story, but all my immediate family members heard it from me.

I was a year old and my mother was taking my 3 year old brother and I to have our pictures taken at the pre-school. I recall someone holding me under the arms to keep me steady on a high stool. I was crying because I was hurting. I wasn't too sure about the accuracy of this memory, but after I was reunited with my mother after a 10 year estrangement that began during my childhood, my mother recounted the story to me just as i had remembered it. If one looks closely at the photo, the knuckles of the lady holding me up and be seen poking through the folds in my dress. Also, my nose is pink and wet from having been crying.

Walking to the bridge to see the colored people (I was told never to go there) and being disappointed that there weren't any red, blue, green, etc. people there! Just some nice brown people fishing off the bridge. I was three and of course got in trouble when I told my mother there weren't any colored people there. I've shared this story a few times and I am sure it happened because I remember the emotions associated with it - curiosity, disappointment, and indignation.
Mary Kate McKinley
I was probably a bit older than 1, wearing a diaper and a white cotton T-shirt, standing in my crib wanting my brother to help me get out. I've told the memory a number of times and am sure it's accurate. I think I was sad.

I was eighteen months old and lying on the back seat of the car. We picked up a stray cat at a gas station, white with yellow blotches. My hand touched its fur as it brushed past me. I was rapturous with the silky feel of it on a moving, living thing with eyes and legs. This memory was confirmed by my mother---not the rapture, of course, but the cat....
Peggy
I was in the car with my mother and a bunch of men in white clothing were coming out of a door. I was just a baby my mother said. My dad was in cook school in the Army and we were waiting for him to come out to take him home. When I told my mom about it.. she was surprised I could remember that far back.

Sliding down a gigantic hill on my new slow sled-- I went back as an adult and it was barely a knoll. Probably six years old-- yes it is accurate-- I told about this as an adult, mainly when I discovered the contrast between children's views and the realities as an adult.

My earliest accurate memory is going to court to be adopted when I was three. My (prospective) Nana had knitted little dresses for my sister and me, and mine was green with a press stud on the belt. I don't remember my birth family now, although I dreamt about them until I was six.
Karen
I remember sitting at the kitchen table with my father. We were both eating soft boiled eggs, dunking the bread in the yolk. After we'd finished my father and I turned our eggs upside down and we smashed them to smithereens. This was what we called "making a mess" and it was great fun. My parents were quite surprised when I described this because it had really happened and it was when my little brother was born and my mother was away. To be quite exact it was in the week after June 12th, 1952, so when I was two years and three months old.
Viviane
My family was going to the beach for a vacation. This was in the mid 1950's, so our car windows were down. A bumblebee flew in and stung me in the ear. I can remember my mother killing it with an alligator purse. I also remember they stopped at an emergency room, and they gave me something pink to drink. I was two years old.
Pam
I was 1-1/2 years old when my mother and I went to Chicago on the train. She was potty training me and I remember being lifted onto the toilet and looking in to see the train tracks below. My mother was astounded that I remembered that. I believe it is accurate because I have not revisited the house we stayed at, but could vividly describe the room layouts and the colors of paint on the walls.
Kathy
I was in Kindergarten and we were having juice, well, I didn't like the color of my up so I hit it with my hand and juice went all over the place. Then sent to the principals office. His name was Mr. Boots and I called him "Bootsy". Glad I'm not the ornery little girl anymore.

my earliest memory was the time i was at least 8 mos. old when i awoke from my nap and the day was clear and warm. The children outside were playing baseball and their ball accidently flew into my grandfather's window and hit his large airmoire dresser mirror, shattering it. Then i heard the noises of the children's departure, fearing from being discovered. It was then that my aunt came inside and took me in her arms and walked me downstairs whilst i looked at the pictures on the wall and as we stepped on the landing of the stairs, that was all i could remember of that day.

When I was two, my parents took me to the fire house to "experience" a real fire truck. They sat me on the front seat of the engine and stood on the pavement below waving to their darling child with much pride. I felt they were about to send me off alone in this cold machine forever! The experience was verified by them and retold by myself as my first trauma.

Standing outside at night with my Mother and stepfather, watching fireworks against the background of a very black and starry sky. I would've been almost 28 months old at that time.

I remember in pre-school, I must have been about 3. I never took a nap and the preschool insisted that I take a nap. I was "persistant", my mother says stubborn, and they finally agreed to put me in a room with 2 other kids who also where "persistant". We had more fun while everybody else slept.

MY EARLIEST MEMORY IS WHEN I WAS THREE OR FOUR. I THREW ALL OF MY STUFFIES OUT OF MY BED BECAUSE IT WAS THUNDERING AND I WAS SCARED. AND THEN I CLIMBED OUT AND WENT INTO MY MOM AND DAD'S ROOM AND I PRAYED THAT I WANTED A LITTLE BROTHER AND NOW HE IS A BIG PEST.

My mom told my brother and I not to leave the front of the house. I was about 2 or 3 and my brother was 4 or 5. So when he said I'll pull you in the wagon around the corner and mom will never know, I beleived him because my mom was busy. We went around the corner and my mom was hanging out wash in the back yard and saw us. I was so scared!!!! I blamed my brother because he was bigger. I told the memory to my mom and brother, but they don't remember it. But it really happened.

We NEVER lived in a house that had a kitchen on the left. My brother insists that we did and our family thinks he is crazy. I have no recollection of this house (because it didn't exist) and I am 2 years older than him. My earliest memory is my brother and I running towards the house after our sister had a run- in with a well. I guess the stress of getting her some help caused me to remember it so vividly.
Hayden
I have memories of a house--either in Cleveland or Peoria, my family lived in both--with a kitchen just past the front door and on the left. I have several memories of that house, including my brother and me being home with a babysitter while our parents were out. Unfortunately, everyone in my family claims we never lived in a house with a kitchen on the left.
Chris
I seem to remember riding on my mother's lap in a VW bug...this would have been 1970... I was 2. I reach out and push in the knob that works the headlights (this is at night, I can see the glow from the radio) and push the knob in, plunging us all into darkness, much to the chagrin of my father (who is driving and who shouts at me). I've told the story a few times before. My mother insists she once told it to me, but I see everything in such detail. I've never really been in a VW bug as a child or an adult, but I remember the vinyl material covering the ceiling and seats...it was covered with little holes, like vents. I imagine I could have created the memory in my imagination...but I don't remember consciously putting the scene together in my head.

I was about three, and I got stuck under a bed trying to get a pacifier. I've only shared this a couple of times. I believe it's accurate. It feels like a real memory.

I remember going to the beach with my father. He would toss me over the waves. They seemed enormous then, but now I suppose they would look small. I loved the ocean even then. The only thing I didn't like was getting my feet poked by a coarse, wooden walkway. My dad dug a large hole in the sand for me to go in. I thought no one would see me. I was scared of crabs in the hole biting my toes! I was a happy baby at the beach!

When I was really young my first friend Matt came over. My little brother was really little and we had one of those hall block things so I remember that Chris (another one of my friends) and Matt had to step over them. Also, the night where I was asleep and a drunk guy thought it was his house so he came in ours, cut himself on the window (or door-I can't remember which) and there was blood all over the kitchen floor. I remember the police barging through the door. I know this is accurate because one of the policemen gave me a stuffed bear, which I still have, and also because my mom and dad talk about it with my grandparents, who came to clean the blood, a lot.
Meg
I don't know how old I was, but I was young. I haven't told it many times but I've replayed it in my head a lot. I'm very sure it's accurate. I was about 5 or 6. I was very sick and had a high fever. Either the fever or the drugs the doctor gave me for it made me hallucinate, and I started talking about the pink and orange horses and how they ran in circles so fast. I know this is accurate because my mother and I have discussed it many times.

I feel I have a fairly bad long term memory, since everyone around me remembers events from when they were 1 or 2. All my memories are one big blur so it is hard to distinguish the time periods of them, but I think one of my earliest memories is a little earlier than kindergarten. A new girl, Stephanie, had moved to an apartment upstairs from France. I used to play with her in her room and she had a really big and pretty Barbie house and tons of barbies. Imitation barbies was all my parents could afford, but I didn't really mind then. She would play mean tricks on me with her mirror, but I can't really recall what she did. We would play in her bathroom and make soap bubbles, and I remember when her grandmother made these round sugary, white and poufy deserts. She was probably my first friend, so I guess that is why I remember her, even though we weren't that close.

It was easter Sunday, me and my older brother were 3 and 4 respectively. We decided to make breakfast for our parents. We went downstairs and started cracking eggs on the floor, dumped out the flour (also on the floor) to make pancakes and then hid peanut butter and jelly crackers all over the house. (easter suprise) When my mom came down she was less than happy, she asked us what we were doing? We replied in our biggest smiles " We make beckfast." Unfortunately our cuteness didn't save us from a spanking.

It was Easter. I had on my Easter outfit and was at my Grandparents. I was proud of my new panties with the ruffles on the backside. I lifted my dress to show my Grandpa my Easter panties. He told me that they were very nice but young ladies aren't supposed to show their panties.
