Ask any young child: The moon is a bright, silvery disk. When you go for a car ride, it glides alongside you, matching your speed no matter how fast you’re driving. As it inches its way up from the horizon to the top of the sky’s dome, it shrinks to nearly half its original size.

In fact, the moon plays tricks on your eyes. Looking at the night sky can help you see how your eyes and brain make sense out of moonlight.

Three things you can do with the moon:

Put it on a piece of white paper.
Measure it.
Take it for a drive.
