Cabspotting is an online system to anonymously
track and record the movements of Yellow Cab
vehicles throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area
and to creatively explore the recorded data. Directed by
Scott Snibbe and designed and developed by Stamen Design, Cabspotting has two major components: a Cab Path Tracker and multiple Cab Projects. By eliminating the urban street grid or base map, the Cab Path Tracker shows the current and historical paths of cab rides around the Bay Area, suggesting an organic system
of use patterns as well as geographic territory. The Cab Projects
are a series of investigations by artists that explore the cab path database, individual cab rides, or other artistic, cultural, political and social issues surrounding the rides. Current artist projects include, In Transit by Amy Balkin, and Fly Cab by Tomas Apodoca.
