Earliest Memory

I remember when I was about three years old, mum offered me 20 cents to throw my dummy (pacifier) into the pot belly stove. 20 cents was a lot of money inth ose days so I did it but got so upset afterwards, I have never really forgiven them for that. I haven't really told the memory to other people but have thought about it a lot, it is accurate, I asked my parents and it did happen.

When my twin brother & I were 5 and had to go to bed early , my Aunt & Uncle would always stop by and visit my parents . Uncle Rodney would always manage to get my very strict father to agree to let him come and say "Hi to the boys". He would always give us a BIG piece of bubble gum to chew on then we would give it back to him befor he left.I always thought that was cool ! My Dad never figured it out.

I was about a year old and I was sitting in a playpen looking out at the pool. My parents and I were at a 4th of July party in New Jersey. I could see the tall trees, hear the sound of peole laughing and a baby crying. Then I heard and saw a little boy fall into the pool. No one saw or heard him, but since he couldn't swim he drowned. Later when my dad went swimming he saw the body and thought it was a doll. I know it's accurate because my mom remembers exactly where the playpen was and from where it stood I could easily see the pool. Also a 2 year old boy did drown at the party and police reports show that no one saw or heard him.

My earliest memory is from about the age of 2 to three years of age. We lived in Fulton Ky.and were visiting my great grandmother. I needed to use the bathroom and someone brought me to the outhouse.I had never seen one before, and hated it. It smelled bad and I was afraid to sit on the hole, thinking that I would fall through. I cried untill they brought me outside. while they tried to talk me into going back in, I wet myself purposely so I wouldn't have to go back inside. I have been told by my moher that it is an accurate memory. I have recounted it several times to others as I am always interested in hearing their earliest memories.

Another of my early memories that I just thought of was when my mom gave birth to my little brother and I was 23 months old. I remember eating all my mom's Jell-O that she got in the hospital. I have told it many times and I am sure it's accurate since my parents confirmed it.

When I was two I took a trip to the Pacific Northwest with my parents. When we were staying on Orcas Island there was a camping area called the "West Beach Resort" that we stayed at. We were about the only people there at the time and I remember a blackberry bush that had a little tunnel in it that I could walk through. I remember the view out of both sides of the "Berry Tunnel"(as I called it): one looked out at the Puget Sound and a dock that stuck out into the Sound, and the other was looking towards a clearing in which our Volkswagen Westfalia camper was parked. My parents always thought that I remembered this spot from photographs, until just lately I began to elaborate on my memories and they realized that my memories included things that weren't in any of the photographs. This last summer we took another trip up to the Pacific Northwest and the place was much like I remembered it, although not exactly the same since it has been 14 years. I was also able to point out the area in which our camper was parked. As for how many times I've told this memory, I've only elaborated on the details of it in the last year or so, and not really very many times.

When I was four I remember falling off of a trampoline and landing on my face right next to a brick and I got a bloody nose. I have told people of this only a very few, but right after it happened I made a big deal about it and told all of my friends. I am fairly sure it is accurate, it is clear in my mind, not like some imaginative happenning somewhere in the past.

I was less than a year and I remember laying in the baby carriage and looking up at trees and the houses on the street. Later when I asked where we lived when I was an infant, it was that street. I have never described this to anyone until now. I asked my mother about the street to verify for my own memory that the memory was true. I have several from infancy that I have never discussed but verified from events later when I was an adult. Yes, I am certain of the accuracy. My memory was photographic until recently. I am 51 now.

I was three, I think. My brother and I shared a room. I remember standing in a crib that was placed by the closet. I don't have any memory of colors in this scene. Same year, we went to New York to visit relatives. I remember walking down the street with my family. Someone big was holding my hand. Then we turned right onto a street with very bright and colored lights. I have told this memory a few times. My mother confirms that we walked onto Broadway and then went to see the Rockettes. I don't remember them.

I was born on November 12th 1962, and have always had a memory of the day Kennedy was shot on November 22nd 1963 when I was 1 year and 10 days old. My memory is more of emotion than visual images. I remember my mother crying all day, the ironing board in front of the television, and the feeling that something terrible had happened. I think I was in a playpen in the living room. I never did the math on how old I was at the time until years after having the memory, and no other family members have told me their stories of the day, so I think it is pretty accurate. I have told the story less than 6 times. but have gone over it in my mind many times, so now it might be more of a "Memory of a memory".

It's the winter before my third birthday. I am being dressed for the snow in my grandmother's kitchen. My mother and grandma are slipping my big sister and me into our winter coats; the kitchen is lit brightly against the grey daylight, and snow is falling outside. I have rarely told this story. I can remember being an infant laying in my crib, my cousin was put in the crib next to me I can see her being put in the crib. We are covered with a soft fuzzy knit blanket. I can see the wooden bars of the crib. There is a warm sensation, I look at my cousin but mostly I am interested in the blanket, my soft 'jammies' the warm color of the wooden bars and a light green rattle, hangin from the bar. I have told my Mother and cousin this memory many times. My mother confirms that all these elements were there and often my cousin would visit and was put to nap with me in my crib.

I remember trying to climb really big, green, hard stairs. I remember the feel of them and slapping my hand on them. I feel my body on them and my left knee pulling up to get on the step. I haven't told of it often, only to siblings. I did finally ask my mother what color the stairs were at the first place we lived and she said they were green and wooden. I would only have been about 8 or 9 months old. I think it is accurate because of the tactile memory of it. The green color is all around and it is semi dark. Most vivid is the pressure on my abdomen and right arm and the need to move my left leg up.

Very first memory is being on my mother's lap, going someplace, crying because I didn't see my siblings, then being on a bed & had stopped crying as siblings were in sight. This had to be a trip when I was 8 months old. Next memory is being in hospital (Shriners), and thrilled about playing with contents of a shoe box. I am told I had been sent paper dolls in a shoe box. There was a colored woman working in that hospital that I loved - "Miss Eba." I remember the big closet that I didn't like going into - the elevator taking me to surgery to redo casts on my feet. - I have never told anyone about that "big closet" or would you call an elevator a small room.

I was 21 months old. I had never told the memory before to any one until about three years ago when my Mother mentioned something about my Grandparents living on a small island and the only access was a small swinging bridge to the mainland. I remember holding onto some wire and looking at water spiders swimming on the surface. I know it is accurate. When I told my mother about my memory she was so surprised because I was alone and I was the only one that could have recalled that. I had gotten away from my Grandmother for a short time and she found me on the swinging bridge.

I grew up in San Francisco near Golden Gate Park. My earliest memory was hearing loud noises from the park and being told that they were racing cars in the park. I later learned that the races took place in '52-'54 and being born in '51 meant I was 3 years old . Another memory involved my older sister and the reservoirs in the Sunset district. She and some friends were supposed to be taking care of me. Instead we went on a high adventure of seaking through a hole in the fence and then climbing under the roof of the reservoir. We ran around on a ledge and I could see the columns holding up the roof. This scene came back many times in dreams until I was finally able to confirm it with my sister. I was about 5 and she later thought how really stupid it was if I had slipped and fallen in the water.

When I was 4 years old, one summer day my parents and I made a trip over to my grandparents in our old brown Cheverolet hatchback. For some reason I got left in the car as my parents went inside the house to drop something off. Curiousity and impatience got the best of me and I found a way to kick the emergency brake off, and proceeded to slowly roll down the driveway. Now fortunately my dad left the windows rolled down, because it was a very hot day. Unfortunately he locked the driver-side door and had to try to unlock the door as his son and his only source of transportation appeared to be headed for disaster. Seemed like an eternity between the time I knocked the car out of park to the time he caught up to it after it rolled into the street. Luckily there was no oncoming traffic and no parked cars directly across the street. This is the earliest memory I can recall, and I haven't worn out telling this story to anyone. I've been told by my folks that this story is painfully accurate, in fact my dad shook his head tonight when I reminded him about this incident.

I distinctly recall one clear morning when I stood by the side of the road on top of a water tank with a large, bright red, rectangular metal cover raised just slightly above ground level. I don't associate this memory with an actual incident, but I remember my mother talking about how I would go with her and my brother to wait for the school bus and both of us would play on top of the water tank cover, and how this stopped after I accidentally fell and scraped my belly on a barbed wire fence below (of which I have no memory). My brother was in kindergarten at the time, which would make me 2 years old. I feel the memory is accurate, and I don't recall mentioning it before.

I remember playing with a blue ball while my mother lay on a couch with my baby brother,Charlie. Charlie died in 1944 at the age of four months. I was born in February 1942, Charlie was born in July, 1944 so I was about 2 years, 6 months. I have not told anyone of this memory. How accurate is it? I know in my heart it is accurate. My mother was very sad at the time. My father was not in the living room in this memory. I know of the couch they were laying on at the time because it was new then. I remember the feeling of frustration because no one would play with me. It was a "dark" feeling.

I remember the feeling of being picked up and my father holding a ping pong racket in my hand, and I remember seeing the ball come at me and my father making me reach for it. It's only an image and a feeling. I was 5 months old. I haven't told this often and it wasn't important enough for anyone to have told it as a story to me. There are no pictures of the event that anyone knows of. We were able to date the memory because my cousins had been given a ping pong set that Christmas. When I was 3, I crawled under the Ice Box in Ft. Kearny, Nebraska after a red ball and cracked my head open. This was one of those "it seems real but is it?" memories. How old? About three years old. Have I told the memory many times? A few, not many. I'm sure it's accurate, because the place and time and people I was with have been verified. I'm sitting next to my cousin on a very scratchy couch in my grandmother's house in Michigan; My cousin (who's also three) and I are both wearing men's white T-shirts and we're stretching the T-shirts way out over our knees, pulling and stretching them out by hooking our toes on the shirt hems. Somebody comes along and thumps us both on our heads. I can smell a strong coffee smell and a small- screened TV in a large wooden cabinet is on.

I was 2 years old and my mother was having a portrait done of me in a white dress with blue polka-dots. I remember her taking the dress out of a gift box and saying that my Godmother , Jeannie, had bought the dress for me. She was very excited. I also remember white sandles to go with the dress. My mother still has the portrait on the wall. I am 45 years old!

I remember a time when I was still in diapers, under two. My aunt had a small wooden highchair for her doll. She put me into the highchair and left me. I recall being afraid that she wouldn't come back and let me out. I have told others about this memory a few times. I know it is true because I have always had this memory and my aunt did play with me like a living doll.

I remember climbing out of my crib. I remember not being allowed to wear my shoes to bed (crib). I remember swinging on the door knobs. All of these memories are from under 3 years old. I have told them many times. I am sure they are accurate. I told them to my mother when I was grown and she verified them.

I remember when I was about 5 years old. I used to watch scary movies before I went to bed. I would wake-up in the middle of the night screaming for my mother. She would come to my room and see why I was screaming for her. I would tell her, and she would tell me that it would be ok. Then she would take me back to bed with her!!

My earliest memory was when I was around 5 years of age. I had a vision of a human size bee rising up outside my living room window. (We lived on the second floor). I've told this story just a couple times. I told my mother this story just a couple months ago, wondering why I had this memory of this lifesize bee. She told me that one year for Halloween she dressed up as a bee. She must've scared the s_ _ t out of me, and that's why I remembered this incident.

I was maybe 2 or 3, still using a strap-on kid's toilet seat shaped like a duck that fit on top of the real toilet seat. I've told it several times. I know it's accurate because I can describe the house we lived in, and we were there for only a short while. I was sitting in my ducky toilet seat, strapped in, when my dad saw a deer across the field behind our house. Everyone went out to see it, and I was stuck on the toilet, forgotten; I couldn't get down. I was indignant they would leave me on my own in such a humiliating situation, and I let them know it.

I'm 13 and my earliest memory was when I fell asleep into my birthday cake and I was turning 2. At my new house. It is accurate because I even have it videotaped.I even remember everyone saying aww! It was a character cake. It had a rainbow on it.Then my mom picked me up and wiped off my face. The rest got washed off in the pool. It was funny. And I always watch it with my friends when it is boring. Then we all were dancing when it started to rain and everyone took pictures of me dancing!!

I remember, when I was 5, being taken by neighbors to a large Catholic Cathedral near Annapolis, and seeing the multicolored lights through the stained glass windows. It is accuraate because it it so vivid. I have never told anyone about it.

my father used to work in a groceries store and because he was the driver and having to pick up other employees early in the morning and drop late at night, he had to the store's old van (Jeep) for the night. Everytime when he arrives at home at night after work, irrespective of the time, myself, together with my other three brothers will climb onto the van while at the gate. My gate was about twenty meters from where the van parked, and one would think we will be taken for the drive, but the car will just drive into the yard and park. I was about 8 years.

I remember crawling out of my crib for the first time. I must have been about 2 1/2 to 3 years old. I've only told of this memory a couple of times. I think it is accurate because in this "picture" in my mind, there are all the correct details of the room I was in.

I was three years old when I had this first memory.I have not told the memory many times. I only relate it to others if they inquire about my first memory. Yes, I'm sure it is accurate The first memory that I can recall is my Dad painting a little wagon that he made for my sister and I. The wagon was pink.

Folding the blanket many times to make it thick and carefully placing it over my feet to protect them from a witch who would cut my feet off if not for the blanket. I was 3 or 4. I've told this memory a few times. I'm positive it's accurate - it was an on-going ritual.

I was 3 and got Scarlet Fever. This was 1949. At that time the treatment was to put you in an isolation hospital with the other sufferers. I was taken away from Mum and Dad in an ambulance, screaming. I remember clearly the place I was taken to and other details. I was there 3 weeks but I did get better. (This happened in England where I live.)

I remember my grandmother (who died when I was 18 months old) standing at the top of an open stairway, looking over the banister and talking to me. I see her mouth move and hear noise, but I don't understand what she's saying. The carpet is red and a little rocking chair sits by grandma's big one in the living room where I stood. I also remember when my father was remodeling our house, making a porch into two bedrooms and a kitchen extension. I remember him standing in a specific spot in what was becoming my sister's bedroom, talking to me and then picking up a green painted board (looks exactly like the porch ceiling boards on the 100 year old house we bought last year!) and walking over to an out building and leaning it up against it. I don't understand what he says, but I know the tone! It was one of pure love to his precious little princess and "helper." I was less than 2 at the time. I was always Daddy's shadow. Yes, it is accurate. After my father's death 13 years ago I found some of those boards under one of the outbuildings on the farm. I'm almost 39 years old, but I remember that moment like it was yesterday.

I was 1 1/2 years old. It is picture in my mind of sitting on the floor and looking up at "huge" side table with a lamp and my "gigantic" father sitting in a chair reading the newspaper. Also an image of crawling in the hallway of our apt. bldg., looking at an "endless" series of doorways. My family verifies the accuracy of that apt. building (the only one we lived in), that we moved before I was two. AND that there were only eight apts. My next and "continuous" memories don't begin until almost age three.

I was 2. A book shelf was right over my bed, and so, every afternoon, instead of sleeping as my mother wanted, I always got up and started "reading" them, so several times she had to tie me to bed. (That was useless - I managed to free myself). Very accurate (even though nobody in my family believes me - but how else would I know that - my mom never told me)

I was two years and I remember being on the dock and getting my shirt caught in a cooler. I cried for a long time and felt very alone, I remember my faamily laughing. I haven't told it many times because it wasn't very interesting. I'm not 100% sure it's accurate but that itis what I remember.
