Earliest Memory

My mother holding me, and singing..."I'd rather be blue, thinking of you. I'd rather be blue over you...then be happy, with somebody else" and "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray. You'll never know Kathryn, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away."

I got a bottle of baby powder and shook it all over my little brother, myself and his bed. He looked like a ghost and my parents laughed. I was maybe 4 or 5. I have not told it many times, but have heard it told and seen pictures my dad took of the incident. Sometimes I wonder if I've made this "memory" from hearing the story, but it seems so vivid.

The Columbus Day storm is one of my earliest memories. As we sat around the table, my eight siblings and I, I looked down the long table at my father, sitting with his back to the wall and outside window. A big oak tree branch crashed through the window and the glass sprayed across the table and floor. This was a dream I had, the window was really only hit by a branch and didn't even break.I was four.

One night I was in my crib. I had to pee really really bad but I couldn't get out. I cried as loud as I could but no one came. So I figured out how to open a latch to the crib to raise up the railing. I climbed out, still crying my lungs out, and walked to the door. I banged on the door for a good litte while crying. I pulled my diaper down so that I could be one step ahead when my parents came. I kept banging and crying but no one came. Finally my father came to the door to get me but I had already peed all over myself and on the floor. By the way, I'm 16.

I must be slow. My earliest memory comes from when I was around 4 years old. My family moved several times when I was young and the first place that I can remember living had a little shed (we call them storage houses today, but this was a shed) behind it. Behind the shed sitting on another street was a large house that I thought was a mansion with rich people living in it. I've been back as an adult and the house is large but not a mansion. One day the people who lived there had their grandson to visit and he played with me. The grandfather took us to the fire station to see the fire engine. I was playing with the rich! Also around that time I severely cut the bottom of my foot on some broken glass while playing around that shed and had to have several stitches. I still have a large scar on the bottom of my foot.

I was 2 1/2 years and in Greely, CO. My mother took me to get a typhoid shot. I balked and refused to let the doc touch me. My mother and my brother sat with me on a fire escape, trying to talk me into taking the shot. I was promised a toy--a monkey that climbed a string--if I would take the shot. I wanted that toy so I let Dr. Weirsbach (I even remember his name) give me the needle. I have only told this a few times, only when a discussion with friends turns to early memories. I can still visualize the toy monkey and the fire escape just outside the doctors office.

It was before I was 1 1/2 years old, my Great- GrandFather passed away. The cofin was brought to thier home, what I remembered most was a net over the cofin, for years I thought my Great Grandfather was buried in a Bassinet. Just this last year I found out that he had a regular cofin, but there was a white net put over the cofin. Back 53 or so years ago they used to bring the relatives back home before they were buried.. I visited with my Uncle about this as it was bothering me about the Bassinet, he is the one that figured out that it was before I was 2 years old.

It was a very sunny day, with very white clouds. My brother and I were laying on the grass, in the back yard. He was 4 or 5. I must have been 2. He held a dandilion under my chin, and it reflected yellow on my chin from the reflection from the bright sun. He told me that this means, "you like butter. I have never told anyone about this. I have thought about this many times, and it is so vivid, it seems like it happened yesterday. I cann't remember yesterday but I can remember this clearly, from 59 years ago. Odd? My earliest memory is visual and emotional only. I recall no sounds or tactile sensations. I lay on my back in my crib looking up and around myself. There were people facing toward me and crowded around the crib railings. I remember those I saw at the foot of my crib seemed very far away. Everyone's face was blank, but I felt safe and secure. Once I acquired language, I thought of them as my guardian angels. It was years later that I understood who these people were and what I was recalling. They were family. My grandparents and my parents were gazing down at me, the new baby. I would have been less than two weeks old.

My earliest memory occurred during the period when my dad and I lived with my grandparents, right after my parents got divorced. I was around two years old, and it was my first Halloween. I dressed up as Big Bird (I loved him!!), and I was so proud because I was finally a big kid and got to go around and get candy. I remember what the jack-o-lanterns looked like on the steps in front of our house, where we walked down into the yard to take pictures. I'm sure we only went to a few houses, within a block or so, but I remember my grandparents showing me off proudly to their neighbors. I also remember being so totally excited before we left that I asked a million times if it was time to go, I ran around the house like a maniac, and was told I had to eat dinner first, but I was so wound up I could barely sit still.

I can see two images from a trip to a wildlife park. I remember sitting in the backseat of the car feeling proud of myself because I was having such intelligent thoughts. I was shocked when I saw a photo of that day because I am wearing a nappy, haven't got very much hair and I look like I have just learned to stand. I think it is accurate because I also remember feeding the wallaby, as I am in the photo. I'm not completely sure because there are a couple of other things I 'remember' well, yet have since learned they didn't happen that way. Eg I remember throwing my teddy up in the air to celebrate because it was his birthday, and somehow I threw him backwards over my head into the fire. I had to run and get Mum to rescue him. She tells me she came in the room of her own accord and caught me dangling him in the fire.

When I was two, I remember riding on my father's shoulder, while he strided across a plowed field. Also, about this same time, I rememember what our back screen door looked like from down below, like I would have been on the first step of the landing. Our big yellow tabby cat came and went through a hole in the screen. I have not told this memory to very many people, because it rarely comes up in conversation. It's accurate, as I have verified it with my parents.

It was pouring rain, or maybe I was just crying hysterically,I watched as dad drove up in his big blue truck and gave me my tuna fish sandwich. thanks dad. My eariest memory goes back to the mid-twenties. My parents were Greek immigrants and decided to visit Greece. i remember being in lower class area. I sneaked up a few flights and peaked into a first class dining room and was awed by the luxury and food that I beheld. I have never forgotten that sight. I remember my first pair of dress shoes. I had just learned to walk. They were those patent leather mary janes with shiny bows on them. They were WAY too small for some reason and I remember being in a pharmacy and SCREAMING at the top of my lungs because my feet hurt and I didn't know how to say it or why they hurt. I got spanked. I know it sounds weird, but to this day I have always liked my shoes a little tight since I started wearing shoes regularly.

When I was real little, maybe 14 months, I remember watching my mom cook from my highchair, and her screaming because a rat ran into the kitchen from outside. I thought it was a cat. I haven't told the memory much to people, because it wasn't life altering or anything, but I'm fairly certain it is accurate because I was adopted as a child and only recently got in touch with my birth mother, who has confirmed the story. I never heard anyone tell it growing up because I was adopted
